Nicola J Davies – Biography
Contemporary Landscape Artist – Vale of Glamorgan
After spending many years working in the media industry, I have spent the past ten years developing my own portfolio of images relating to the landscape.
I am greatly inspired by the Heritage Coastline and wish to continue an exploration of journeying through the Welsh landscape. As my arts practice has developed, I have become fascinated with the micro world of nature which has informed my learning over the past few years.
I am always producing new landscapes and I have a body of work based on an exploration of winter light on my local coastline. I have been influenced to paint both larger more representational landscapes and also have been inspired to look more in depth at reflections of light in water and in rock formations which create a more abstract feel to the very textural paintings.
‘Reflection’ and a development of a ‘Reflective Journey’ was the focus for my MA Arts Practice Degree (Fine Art), at the University of South Wales from 2013 – 2015. Developing from painting, an exploration into using combined embossed printmaking, photography and semi-sculptural/sculpture techniques were used to capture the multi dimensional elements of nature. In wishing to create an evolving theme, the subject of a reflective journey has potential as a narrative for future projects chronicling visits and research from mapping different landscapes.
My chosen coastal environment is fundamental to my practice as a landscape artist. By stepping outside into nature, I allow myself to become open to contemplation through contact with natural phenomena.
I have exhibited in Cardiff and the South Wales area, in the Oriel Ty Coch Gallery, Oriel Canfas, St Donats Art Centre, Oriel Mimosa Gallery, Llandeilo. In May 2014 I attended the ‘Untitled’ Art Fair in London and I also have paintings to view in Arbenning of Pontcanna, Cardiff. As part of a collaborative show: ‘Threads of Nature’ Art Exhibition ran from December 2nd 2015 at Penarth Pavilion in South Wales and I have been involved with the shared walk group, exhibiting in the South Wales area (www.ashardwalk.wordpress.com). I am a member of the Women Artist’s Association and exhibit regularly in the Vale of Glamorgan and exhibit with the HeARTh Gallery at Llandough Hospital (Vale of Glamorgan) that encourages gallery activities that promote engagement with patients and visitors.
Over the past 2 years I have become involved with the Arts Council of Wales: Lead Creative Schools Scheme, as a Creative Agent and a Creative Practitioner. The role of the Agent is to coordinate school projects in an innovative scheme intended to support progressive approaches to creative teaching and learning. The role of the Creative Practitioner delivers a practice based programme that promotes cross curricular learning. I have recently completed three sculptural projects for a ‘well being’ project in primary education and an arts/science/conservation scheme for secondary schools using the topic of ‘Bee Worlds’. During my involvement with the LCS, I have had the opportunity to witness some magical opportunities that may not have been ordinarily accessible for pupils.
I also act as an Arts Consultant with Deborah Drew Designs: Interior Design Company, based in Cardiff. Working alongside the development of an interior design project with Deborah Drew, my role provides clients with a custom portfolio tailored to individual lifestyle spaces.
